Well, I was supposed to take my Supra out for a spin for the first time (first time legally, that is....), today, but what happens.. well ... the battery light is on and it stays that way no matter what I do.

After a 2 hour drive, the voltage of the battery has dropped from 12,50 to 10,2, causing my digi dash to almost fade out....

I assume its the alternator that went south...

Whats the most easy way to replace it? Take it out from underneath? How much does a used one usually cost? I know a guy who can rebuild it completely for about $60. He's currently rebuiling my ford escort alternator.. yeah, I busted that one too yesterday -- 2 alternators going south in just 2 days... f*ck*ng unlucky

The bearing seized on mine yesterday, so I just did this. It's pretty easy, disconnect the neg, bat. cable, unplug the alt, there's a plug and a post connection. There are two bolts: one on the bottom which is big and acts as the hinge against the block (14mm on mine) and the top one which sandwiches the adjustment bracket and a sliding tab (12mm IIRC). Take the top one out and take the nut off the bottom one. Then from under the car, you should be able to remove the bolt while holding the alt up and it'll drop right out. Goes in the same way. The bitch about getting it back in is the adjustment slider bolt, getting it through the adjustment arc AND slider tab AND threaded in requires some  just make sure the little 10mm nut on the threaded thing the sliding tab is on is moved up toward the block enough before trying desperately to thread in the bolt.... :)

If you are installing a new belt/belts (good time to), then you'll have to remove the fan/shroud and upper rad hose too...

I think my belts cost me around $10 each from the local Napa store.

Easy job, as described above. I can get all my belts in and out without removing hoses or the shroud, just by turning the fan as I pull them out.

oh okay .. sounds like it might be a good idea to change them sometime.

I just hate that my alternator went south ... so did the alt. on my ford escort just 4 days ago :-( its getting too damn expensive .... and with the turbo on my 5mge, it will make it even harder to replace the alternator.....

The turbo may make it harder to get at the alternator, but at least while you are under there, you can stare at the exhaust manifold and in your best Homer Simpson voice say "MMmmmm...... Turboooo......."
