what size speaker will fit in the rear stock bracket? i did have a pioneer 5x7 which is the right size i know, but the stock brackets bend up on two and down on the other two, what speaker can you fit back there in the stock bracket without any mods to it?

4" or 4x6 plates fit nicely in the rear brackets. You'll have to drill mounting holes or make some brackets to mount them in though. I don't think you'll every find a speaker that just bolts right in. Fitting a 5x7 on top of the bracket is tough. The inside of the speaker cover is about 5" and most 5x7s are 5 1/4" to 5 1/2" wide.
I have Infinity 4x6 plates in the back locations. They sound good, and they were a neat, easy install.

The front could use some bigger midrange drivers, like in the doors...but unless I have pods fabricated or something where the pockets are...I'll have to settle for what I have.

I am not cutting those door panels. No way.

Stephen,

I'll give you a set of door panels that you can cut up if you want to go that way then you can save yours for if you ever want to go back to stock. :)

I have 5 1/4 2 way round speakers in the rear stock location. They bolt into the stock braket but the bolts dont use the bracket bolt holes.
If you set the speaker on the braket and adjust it you can fit the bolts through the speaker holes and inside the edge of bracket. It holds well.
Wow...you managed to fit 5 1/4 speakers in the rear locations? How did you get the covers back on?

Do you have photos? I'd really like to see this :)
Stephen the midrange drivers I used on my Stereo install page are 5 1/4" They are an easy fit because the angled mouting tabs on the speaker brackets dont get in the way. The main problem I see with aftermarket 5x7"s is that they put a plastic ring arround the edge of the speaker and you cant bend the tabs the right way in order to month them or the surround will seperate from the basket.
5 & 1/4s in the rear is pretty normal, in fact most stereo places recomend thats what you buy for the rear of a mk2. They just drop right in, but you have to modify the mount a little to find places to screw all four corners down. Lots of aftermarket 5x7s will fit too, as long as they don't have the plastic surround. Just bend the tabs up. Personally I"m going to try and squeeze some 6s in the back next time.

I got all four to screw in and didnt have to mod the bracket at all.
I have those exact speakers in my car- Pioneer 5x7!

they won't fit, your right. So what I did was take some tin snips to the cheap little bracket in the rear and cut off the tabs, and widened the oval hole in the middle a bit. If you're squemish about that, you can pick those brackets up in just about any junkyard.

And yes, the covers fit perfectly. I'd show you them, but I'm waiting to get my digital pics from Bill (with the huge gallery). Just trust me, they fit. fine.

I even went the extra mile and put some foam padding under it all around, to help eliminate the "tinny" sound from the sheetmetal underneath. I don't know if it really works, or if it's all in my head...

G'day All,

I had this problem with my Australian Spec car as well. I went and bought 5x7 Pioneer Speakers. My brother solved the problem by fabricating brackets which substitute the original ones which now sit in my bedroom. The tip is to have the speaker magnet close to the chasis seperated by a sponge tilted in a way that the OEM cover covers everything.

Hope that is an idea. Now i have 5"x7" in the back and the original 4" in the front with a 12" in the boot.

My SA63 has 5" speakers all around with a 10" in the boot.

Cheers All.

I'll take the door panels if they are the leather ones and not the cloth ones 8)

Sorry, they are Terra Cotta panels and therefore not leather.

Leslie
I got an extra pair of the terra cotta ones...but I put the black and gray leather ones in and I like the look of them a lot :D So if they were leather then I'd cut mine or yours and if I screwed one up and/or didn't like the speakers in the door, then I can replace it.
