I am working on getting the speedometer working on an 86 manual, as far as I can determine the problem is in the transmission were the speedometer drive gear and speedometer driven gear mesh. Already replaced the driven gear as it was worn. I can spin the shaft of the new driven gear with out anything stopping it. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Sounds like you have a pretty common problem. The drive gear on the tranny tailshaft can come loose and slip backwards on the shaft. If you jack up the passenger side enough, you won't spill any tranny fluid when you pull the driven gear assembly out. When you have the assembly out, look inside and locate the drive gear. Then, take a long-bladed screwdriver and lever it back into place. You should hear a nice "click" when it goes in.

good luck!
