Heres the backbrief...bought an 84 with an 85 MPH speedometer-should have been a big give away that there was a problem. Anyways found a 130 MPH speedometer in the junkyard. So I got it and switched it, but I did'nt switch the odometer part (the guts) because I wanted the same miles that were already on the car. Want I wanted to know is on the cars with the 85 mph face are the back portions calibrated to that face plate? I know that tach off a celica to a supra would be off but the speed? Thanks

Lots of headaches with that one.

More than likely it has nothing to do with the guage cluster or it's guts. There is a small nylon gear in the transmission which turns the speedo cable. Those gears tend wear out over time. Go ahead and pull it and see if the teeth are had. It's located on the passenger side of the w58. One 12mm bolt holds it in. Count the number of teeth and go get a new one from Toyota. Problem solved.

If you do the swap... there is a tach chip located on the back of the tach guage. Pry up it's prongs and solder the original chip onto the new tach you want to use. Dunno how accurate it would be. I've got a 88 7mgte tach chip on my 85 tach.

The actual speedometer/odometer needle assy is different between the 85 and 130mph speedo. The Celica and Supra cluster speedo parts are the same stuff though, they both use the same tranny and such.

Speedometer cable

I'm going to check that piece on the transmission, but was wondering how difficult it would be to replace the speedometer cable If I had to? And how often do they go bad ?

a semi related question...
i got a cluster from a celica, so im probably going to have to go find a different gear arent i?
due to the change from the 85mph speedo to 130mph.

ive got an 82 with 3.73s, but the same w58 tranny as the celica, do the rear end ratios play much of a difference with this speedo gear, or is it just transmission dependant.

id rather not tear my dash apart and discover that i need to drive down to the toyota shop and try to fool around getting the right gear.
