Yesterday i went to pick up my Head (port and polish and 3 angle valve job), but the guy (owner of the shop) was out for luch. so i was just there looking around his shop and out of nowhere some mechanic (assistant) popped out of nowhere and asked me whats up. Im like nothing just looking around. then he looks out an sees my supra and says "is it fast" i told him no :twisted:. Yadda yadda yadda we started talking about the supra engines. and he starts telling me i have a 5ME in my supra. and that the mk3 had a 5MGE and the mk4 has a 7MGE/7MGTE. im like HUH?!? are you kidding me. this guy starts getting a bit mad and kinda raising his voice. After setting him straight and telling him what supra has what engines he turned around and walked away. :roll:. I guess he got mad cuz he was wrong. ohh well i got my head back and all was good

Have any of you had any thing like this happen you?

The closest thing to that I ever experienced was when I was driving my Vette at my old high school homecoming parade a couple of years ago. A couple of guys were talking to me about the car, and one of them said he worked for a Chevy dealership and was a mechanic there. Personally I think he worked in the detail/wash shop, but I wasn't going to bust his bubble. He started telling his friend all sorts of strange/wrong tech specs on the C5 Vettes. I didn't try to set them straight since I could tell neither Cleatus nor Jim Bo had enough combined IQ points to remember anything I said past kick off time. It was hard to keep a straight face as I just nodded along, but I got through it somehow! If was funny though.

I was at a toyota dealership with a friend with a mk4 getting it looked at. When we got the receipt it said "Celica" on it. I informed the head of the service dept that the car model was wrong on the bill. So he says, "Oh, we just get the model names from the VIN numbers" So I say "so whys it wrong then?" "Its not, you know, celica supra, they're the same thing!" I laugh and tell him he's very wrong and he quickly walks away and ignores me. :roll:

That's not quite as bad as my friend who thinks you can have a 2.8 liter with 168 cubes, OR a 2.8 liter with 218 cubes. I tried explaining the math didn't work on this, but quickly gave up. :lol: He's a good buddy of mine too, that's the best part. Best thing that ever happened to him was his Neon got impounded :twisted:

actually it didnt get impounded its just sitting at home rotting away :p.

I drove a mk2 to autozone to get some wax or something and this parts clerk was out front on his smoke break. He sees the mk2 and says something like "I used to have a supra like that and it was turbo and it was really fast and yada, yada." Given how few people have turbocharged a mk2 I just figured he was blowing smoke but he didn't give any details that one could refute. There just seemed something scary about him so I just listened and nodded and left with my wax.

It is always an issue at our dealership about the CELICA name on a Toyota Supra ticket.... I worked as a Technician and sometimes try to look for a Celica but actually it was a Supra..... I think Toyota is still classify it for a Celica Supra...

had someone tell me the 5mge was a v12, cause it had two 'heads' that stuck up... you know, cam towers look a little like heads and all, but he couldnt explain the single intake and exhaust manifolds.

also had parts people tell me the 5m is a 3.1 liter.

When I useta use Alldata at work, they lumped a lot of Import only specs together with US only car specs-So look up air filter for 82 Supra and machine asks if its turbo-And with all the engine choices available in these cars off shore-ARGHHHH-Some clerks are just that-And some are Car Freaks like us-Every time I buy parts, I just assume that they think its a 2.8 V-6 GM OHV in MY Supra!!-Wait til I can confuse them w/turbo swap!!-Ran into gal @ McDs in Everett other day w/Brite White 85 Supra-"Mines a factory turbo""-"It IS? How do ya know?"-"Guy who sold it to me told me so!"-Yeah-Can I look under hood?"-"Nah-Dont know how it opens!" :drinking: :lol:

what kind of ticks me off is all the ricers ask me if i have a turbo.....they just all assume every supra is turbo....then i go and explain that turbos didn't kick in till the 3rd gen, and then they think that the mkII is the first gen and i have to spend like 20 minutes explaining the history of the supra

Dam, I have lost count of how many times i have had to do that :roll: stupid ricers

I have also had that same conversation with a girl a while back. she told me that she bought the car from some doctor and that it had a factory turbo. then i asked her if it was auto and she said "Yea and it had a Turbo button inside, every time i hit it the turbo would kick in" :roll: Then i asked her if she even knew how a turbo looked like and she said "No :? "

Yeah. Something like that happened to me.

I went to the Misubishi dealer to get some floor mats for my mom's Galant, and one of the salesmen tried to talk me into getting a Lancer (this is when they first came out here.) I said no, but if you're getting the Evo VII, then maybe.

After a while we started talking about tuning, and he started ranting about his 90 somehing escort , and then proceeded to tell me the EVO is a twin turbo 4.

I looked at him like he was crazy.

Then the started going on saying "It's a twin scroll turbo. So it has two turbos." Now, I don't know what the hell twin scroll is, but I sure as hell know that ALL evos only have one turbo.

I got my floor mats, and walked off mad that a dealer didn't know shit about the cars he sold.

Twin scroll turbos have dual entries on the exhaust side. It basically divides the turbine housing into two sections, improving turbo spooling. The 3SGTE's have twin entry turbos.

had a performance place that sells racing parts for american cars asked for a 580 lift cam for small chevy he said it would not fit the lobes were to big for a small block :lol: :lol: :lol: i laughed so hard i had to sit down on the floor. he looked square in my eye with complete confidence he was right. all cocky attitude and all. so i gave him the part number to order it from crane cams. he still sweared its not gonna work. so had the manager make the order after i was done ordering it i asked him " do you honestly beleive a camshaft manufacturer is gonna sell something that will not work at all?" he still said, "i don't think its gonna work!" i looked at the manager in disbelief, he turns to the guy and says, "how did you ever get this job stupid!" appologized to me for any inconvienance i might of received from his employee and gave me 50% off the cam price.

you know i love it when poeple ask me if my mk2 has a turbo. cuz i love to say yes .. i really love it when they then ask to race. my reply-(if you ask for it im guna give it to you) ok i will kick your ash if you wont it. i then will worn them this is a 12s supra so u will lose but they dont beleve me. love my mk2 7mgte :D
