Stupid Pop-ups

2136 Views 21 Replies 16 Participants Last post by  Emohawk
I want to hear from a moderator or administrator on this but the last couple days i've had no other windows up and i keep getting pop-ups every so often while viewing this site and its quite annoying? Is it just me on crack or is anyone else having this happen to me. Its happened on a few different computers, mine, one at school, and at work.

Has anyone else had this happen?

Or is there some other sort of program causing the interuption of my forum browsing?

I think it is this site, I have had a couple of windows up and none of them seem to make any popup adds come up, but as soon as I get onto this site the appear

:bad-word: :2gunfire: FREAKIN POP-UPS
never had it happen here myself
Try popswatter, it is a free program. I searched, there is no zankswatter program available at this time

Guys...

It is physically impossible that CS.com or the forum is generating popups on your computer. How do I know this? I installed the forum and I know for a fact there is NO java script and no code anywhere on this website to "create" pop-ups. Same goes for the main directory at www.celicasupra.com - no pop-up code there either.

I would be willing to wager you have what is called "Spy-ware" on your PC. I bet that if I looked at your machine right now, you've at one time installed Kazaa or something similar. So much freeware out there comes laden with Spy-Ware silently piggy backed on it -- it's pretty commonplace.

Go here and download AdAware 6.0: http://fileforum.betanews.com/detail.php3?fid=965718306 - install and run it.

Make sure you click the "check for updates now" first, then click "start" and let it scan till it's finished. The software will notify you with both a visual and an audio alert if something is discovered. To remove any Spy-Ware found, make sure all the boxes are checked on the results window and just follow the steps to complete the removal process.

The program is free - I have it installed on my PC and other than the occasional pop-up I get on a few other websites (those are usually java script driven by the way), I have no issues. Leslie Grover and Aaron Garney have AdAware installed on their PCs - if you want a 2nd opinion, go for it.

I am running Internet Explorer 6.0, and Netscape 7.1 - I have no issues with popups on the CS.com website. There are no scripts installed anywhere on this website to create pop up ads, so get that idea OUT of your heads.

Thanks!

Never happens on any of my machines....the newer versions of most browsers have a setting which you can use to squelch pop-ups (and only allow certain ones, like the "private message" one from this site). And yes, for WIndows users with spyware issues, the Ad-aware program works quite well.

Steve summed it up nicely :)

You don't actually own that pimp-mobile, do you?????

adaware rocks! works exceptionally well.
BHO demon is pretty good for the IE based stuff.
I do get a popup here whenever someone sends me a private message, does that count?
point 3; pimpmobiles: I like the yellow one better
No popups here. Sounds like people have spyware installed. That's what happens when you install freeware programs.

more then likely it's the "gain" software that comes with alot of stuff. IE DivX
hey thanks sidman for the update, i figured it wasn't our site, i beleive the other day my gf accidentally dl something, i'll try that adware and see where it gets me
yes, yes, yes... Adaware is the greatest thing to remove them godammed spyware cookies! Also, if you aren't using Mozilla for a browser, you aren't browsing!!! Mozilla (and Nutscrape, I think-same engine) has a browser pop-up killer built in. Others who like IE (still can't understand why, but the choice is yours), should use popswatter...
The only pop-ups I see on this site are MK II headlights.
Sidman suggest a couple of months ago that I should install and run Ad Aware 6.0. I did, ran it and removed several things that were causing me issues. I run it weekly now and you would be amazed at some of the names that come up associated with spy ware.

One word of caution, The original link Stephen sent me also had an ad for a program called spyware Nuker. I also installed it not knowing that wasn't what Steve was talking about. Trust me here: DO NOT DO THIS!
Spyware nuker just replaces all the existing spyware with new spyware of their own. I thought my computer was going into melt down till Stephen insisted I remove spyware NUKER and rerun Ad Aware. It pulled hundreds of NUKER entries. I deleted them and everything has returned to normal.

At Stephen's suggestion, I go to the Microsoft website weekly, check for and download all critical patches and any other programs that interest me. Then I run Ad Aware. If you get into the habit of doing this, you will keep your computers relatively safe.
