Got a problem with my sunroof (like thats a suprise).the panels rear passenge side would not seat completely leaving a gap between the panel and the roof.So armed with my Toyota shop manual I managed to get the headliner out...ripped in half no thanks to someone using a whole tube of RTV adhesive to make it stick to the sunroof panel. I already had a pristine replacement on hand so no big problem. However when I opened the sunroof whenm it gets to the end of travel it makes a grinding noise. When I close it, the passenger side and the drivers side don't close evenly and then it does'nt close all the way...like a 1/2 inch gap.I have a few ships where the bracket mounts to the sunroof just in case I have to make the adjustments....Any idea what could be the problem? P.S when I do this I don't have the headliner installed, I'm assuming that I can make the adjustments and then install it...will it matter? Thanks

Haynes adjustment

Sounds like it needs an adjustment  and sunroof motor is good:

I believe you should look closely to see the alignment the roof has w/the body and where you described> the passenger rear. Adjust the sun roof bracket and rear bracket by loosening the bolts and moving the sun roof to the front or rear. Then retighten the bracket bolts.

Haynes way of saying:

Carefully check the level of the sun roof and the rear panel. If neccessary, change the level by substituting a different shim.
Maybe it(sunroof) will w/ease up and no more unwanted noise. hth

I'm about to do this since mine makes clicking noises and I think my sunroof motor is gone. But have a workin one I'm about to put in. Maybe I'll take some pics on the brackets and motor swap. Mine is in deep need of alignment, so my motor may work after the straightning, I'll have to check and see tomorrow :) it has been freakin cold out here lately when night comes :x

See ya later neighbor

All I know about the sun roof: I replaced mine('85) with one from my parts car('82) and I had to put 7-8 damn shims on both sides in order to make it seat!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Fixed

Well thanks for the advice guys..went to the local junkyard and removed the tracks and all the associated gear from an 85 Celica GTS. Seems when I looked into the cavity between the headliner and the roof, half of the rear mount hardware plastic was laying back there. So I gutted another one from the junkyard that was in good shape and badda bing badda boom its fixed
