Hey Folks! I'm new here and junk. I had a super super nice 85 in awesome original shape until I was rear-ended on the freeway and it was totalled. It makes my heart hurt. Not to mention the insurance company (Liberty Mutual) a year later is still screwing me on the value of the car.
So now I have a much lesser 85 supra, and it's having issues with the sunroof. Even though the working parts off the good car were put on the current car, it doesn't really work. I'm not the one who actually did the swapping of the sunroof so I am looking for any info you folks might be able to share with me regarding problems/fixes.
The roof moslty worked, but while closing it would make a horrible grinding noise about an inch before it was totally closed, and then it would close with no noise after that point. I've tried to research it a bit, but don't really know how it works or what would make it behave that way, or what steps would most likely fix it. Thanks for any info you may have.

Hmm, the thing I can think of that's different in the sunroof's last inch or so of travel is the wind deflector. Maybe it's binding while it's collapsing. With the sunroof open, play with it and see if it's smooth. Also, use tape or something to hold it down and then close your sunroof to see if that makes a difference.

If you did not swap the sunroof yourself perhaps you should. Take the panel out (very easy) inspect the track run the motor to the closed and open position, if theres still grinding it has nothing to do with the panel. Its in the motor itself. If theres no grinding inspect your panel, the seal etc. you can also remove the wind deflector. You know process of elimination.
Get ahold of some shims for adjustment, if needed.

Also when you remove the panel yourself you can check for rust and do what you think you need to with it.

Thanks for the info guys! Can you tell me if the sunroof can be removed without removing the headliner? I figure I'd ask before trying it. I did find out that the "Front shoe" is broken, so I believe that to be the cause.

You need to remove the moulding around the opening to remove the headliner. The sunroof headliner is only attached at the front, so pop it off and slide it back, that completely seperates it from the panel. There are six ( or less HaHA) screws holding the panel on.
