In September Road & Track on page 48 there is a quick mention of Toyota's plan to reintroduce the Supra in the USA??

Anyone have more information or pictures??

This has been discussed elsewhere but Toyota is leaning the direction of the 2000 GT look with an I6 in the base model and a V8 in the highline model.

when did they say I6? Last I heard it was still v6.

That I could handle if it was true. A v8 being offered in a supra would be ok if you could still get it with an I6. We all know the I6 model would be the real drag strip terror  (2jzgte swap or conversion anyone?)

A new Supra would be cool. I'm not sure about the v8 option though. They should stick to tradition and keep the Inline 6 like they have since the 2000 GT. Companies these days are moving away from Turbo cars which is really sad imo. There's only so far you can go with an N/A...besides, they are so boring.

I wish Nissan and Mazda release the 350Z and RX-8 with a Turbo or Supercharger (I know they wont)...at least then it might persuade Toyota to do the same...They would only be releasing a new Supra to compete with these cars in the first place.

We have so many V8's over here...There's something about Japanese cars and V8's that don't mix...I don't know.

I've seen concept pics of this new Supra...just trying to remember where I saw them...If I find out, I'll post the URL. :)

EDIT: Here is a LINK to some '04 Supra pics.

I agree totally on the Japanese V8 point, at least as far as sports cars go. The move into the large truck range (Nissan Titan) calls for V8s, and they work in big luxury cars (as large as Japanese cars get, anyway). Just doesn't work in sports cars though, even the NSX was a V6.

Thanks for the link, those concepts are pretty varied (and most of them are pretty out there). Most likely are the Yellow one (too much like 350Z) and black one (pretty good, but I don't think the front end really works).

The 4000-5000GT also on that page happens to look exactly like the Gallardo.

I think the last prototype pic from the Japanese magazine is my favorite. Right below it says there are rumors it might even come with a V-10  While there at it they might as well make a V-12 version, it'll be like having 2 I-6's :eek2:

When Toyota releases the new Supra the 6-cyl will be the Supra and the V8 variant will be for the Lexus lineup.

Regards,
James (who has always said that Toyota will release a mk5 Supra)

give this up, no one knows. There is at least a thread once a week about it. There are rumours, there are"spyshots" of artistic representations. What it all comes down to is, no one knows and toy ain't tellin.

yeah but its still fun to talk about :p Come on now, we're supra guys, of course we're going to talk about this in this day and age!

All I know is toyota has been crazy secretive about all of this, there has been pretty much nothing but a few teasers and bare bones rumors tossed our way. I fully expect to walk into the corner store any day now and see a full exclusive preview of a production ready supra in the latest Car and Driver, Motor Trend or whatever. I think they're just going to drop it on us. Heres hoping it obliterates the competition. The ball is in Toyotas court, all of the other major players have made their move. They know whats out there and they should know what they have to do to make the best damn afordable super car on the market. Now if only it doesn't look like ass.

NEWSWEEK EXCLUSIVE!!!!

A quick trip to Wal*Mart has netted an issue of Newsweek with the new MK V Supra on the cover, and an in-depth article inside!

I'll let you make your own opinion on the styling, but I think they may have taken the retro theme a bit too far with this one.

Stats:

An inline six cylinder (258 C.I.D.) is standard! And a 304 C.I.D. V-8 is optional!

Still a hatchback, but no giant rear spoiler. Its possible that a large spoiler will be optional.

Orange appears to be a color choice, obviously inspired by "The Fast and the Furious" MK IV, or possibly "The Dukes of Hazzard" Dodge Charger. I would assume white, black, red, blue, and silver will also be available. No word on Terra Cotta.

Without further ado, what you've all been waiting for: The MK V SUPRA!

Well, the Grempra doesn't look too bad, really...

Gotta dig them white walls.

I bet it does the 1/4 mile in what...... maybe a WEEK?
From this site: http://www.angelfire.com/pa3/ford/performance1.htm

1974 AMC Gremlin 17.8 (0-60) 18.8 (1/4 mile)
1977 AMC Gremlin X 17.9 (0-60) 20.8 (1/4 mile)

The model pictured is a 1971, so it may be a bit faster without smog equipment found on these later models.

Well they'll need to turbo the RX-8 to make up for the 20 HP loss from the port to the showrooms.

None of the newer Japanese sports cars are turbo. Hopefully Toyota will look at this and laugh. Then put a turbo on their flagship to piss them off.
