Well I parked the Supra a while back to take care of some body rot and deterioration from 10 years of daily driving in South Florida weather. It had problems in the roof, sunroof, doors and quarters that need attention.

I decided to try and find a hardtop roof in good shape and do a sunroof delete by swapping out the skin and center brace. It took a few months of searching but I finally found one from a CS member in California who was willing to cut it off and crate and ship it to me in Florida. It was almost rust free and only got minor damage in shipping.

Once I got the skin removed from the donor roof section I had something to work with.

I went about cutting off the old roof skin from my car.

Here I have most of it removed except for the edge along the drip rail.

I blasted the roof members to get rid of the leftover rust and laid down some epoxy primer.

I also cleaned up the underside of the new skin and laid down epoxy primer.

Many hours and days later it is welded in and ready for bodywork.

I skipped a few details of the amount of work it is to do this but now I have a solid roof the rebuild the rest of the car under!

I will update the progress.

Badass! I'm embarking on a "Rust-O-Ration soon myself! Looks like you're doing an amazing job! Best of luck, and please keep documenting the work!

Dang! What an unpleasant surprise! Looks like you're doing a fantastic job! Can I hire you to repair my newly purchased '83 rustbucket?? Lol.

Damn, that's some nice work! Are/were you a professional body man??

God bless! I just bought my first Supra, and it has it's share of rust! Probably waaay more, once I dig into it! Thanks for documenting your battle with the rust demon! Inspiring!

That's a shame! And someone should invent (if they haven't already) a welder like you described. With LED technology being what it is these days, sounds like a possible DIY project for someone!

Beautiful work! Looks factory! My '83 is gonna need a lot of rust repair. Not asking for all your "secrets", but just wondering how you fabricate those amazing looking panels yourself?? Do you have a lot of expensive metalworking tools? I would love to be able to do half as well!

Well, as others and myself have said, you appear to be a "Master of Metal"!!! Those panels look like something you bought rather than made! What I wouldn't give to be blessed with your gift! And thank you for documenting it for us! Keep it going! That car is gonna be gorgeous inside and out!! So, you're the original owner?? Amazing!
Yes, this car is gonna be amazing! So you restored it back in 2008?? Wow! You're definitely inspiring me to restore my newly acquired "rustbucket" I purchased from Michigan! What was I thinking?? Lol.

Glad you were able to get it mixed up. Thanks again for sharing this build. Gonna look incredible when it's done!

Looks amazing! Fantastic job! I'm facing a similar project with my rusty '83 as i said previously. Can I ask how much time invested so far in bodywork and paint? Want to know if I will live long enough to finish mine!

Once again, awesome job. Takes dedication and a lot of hard, dirty tedious work to achieve something like that. Also super special that you are the original owner of the car. I doubt too many here can say that.

Yep. The truth hurts sometimes. You either have to be rich or have (or acquire) some skills to restore an old car. Can't wait to see your car finished up, it's gonna be a beauty!

I have been working on gettting the plastic parts(flares and 85 spoiler) ready for paint. Also tackling a few other restoration jobs like the fuel filler splash guard. I posted a pic up earlier of the sorry state of my part. I found it is made from polyethylene and is heat weldable. So I ordered up a plastic fusion welder and some LDPE welding rod for $85. I was surprised at how well it works. This is what it the welder looks like.

And what I had to start with.

After starting on the major cracks I got good results. The inner mounting point got stainless mesh embedded in the back side to reinforce that area.

I then worked on the upper mount which also got the stainless mesh embedded on the backside.
The lower portion was a bit trickier as there was a lot of missing area. I had a piece of metal shaped for that area that I had riveted in during a previous repair and was able to use that as a shape form to melt in a bunch of filler rod to replace the missing area. It took a while but it came out well. I used a carbide burr on slow speed and a 3" roloc 60 grit to smooth it out a bit. Not real pretty, but functional!

Since nothing really sticks to polyethylene I am debating whether to sand it all and try to coat it with something or just leave it like it is and install it up under the fender where no will even see it.
Man! You're as good with plastic as you are with metal! Looks 100% better!

Always look forward to any progress updates on your car!! I'm still waiting just to start my project, gotta get my building (barn) ready first! Like the old 80s song by The Fixx "One Thing Leads To Another"!! Great job! Keep it coming! That car is gonna be insane!

Myself and others have said it before....that car is gonna be a STUNNER! Dang it looks good! Can't imagine the hours involved, and I know previously you has said you don't even get to work on it as much as you want to. (Story of most of our lives!). Keep it up! Looks like you're in the home stretch now!
Thought I would post an update of what is happening with my Supra project since I haven't updated in a few months. September 28th was a bad day for us here in the Naples/Ft Myers area of south Florida. Hurricane Ian decided to flood out my home with 3 feet of nasty saltwater so most all of my time has been spent dealing with insurance claims and cleaning out the house to prepare for repairs. The Supra is safe though in my shop at a different location. I just have not had the spare time to do any work on it. My finished car projects that were in the garage at the house did not make it out alive. My full custom 1949 Chevy pickup and my 1973 Trans Am were totaled out and sent off to the insurance auction along with around 70000-80000 other cars from the area. I just did not see me getting the time to rebuild these cars in the near future.

After having lived in the same house for 45 years and going through many hurricanes I can say I have never experienced anything close to what Ian did. The wind was not too bad but the storm surge came in so fast and unexpectedly that there was nothing to do but put the important stuff as high as you can and shut off all the circuit breakers.

The Trans Am was picked up from auction by a You Tuber and is up and running again but still needing a lot of work. They drained 6 gallons of saltwater out of the engine before any oil came out! Amazingly it actually ran well after a new ignition module, carb and fuel pump. The pickup is still stuck at Copart waiting to be auctioned.
I will post updates when I get back to working on the Supra.
Very sad to hear about your misfortune, along with many others in your area! I'm in Louisiana and also no stranger to them damn hurricanes! Glad your Supra is OK, been following your progress for a good while. Hope everything gets better for you and you can resume work on that awesome car!
