Hello everyone,
Glad to be a part of this infomative forum. I just bought an 84 p-type (i think). It has a couple of problems, needs a battery (no biggie), tailgate is a little rusty and needs a new exhaust but for the price, I think its worth it. I wanted to ask whats the cheapest exhaust to get, someone said magnaflow sounds quite nice and its under $100. Any other options? Also what about cat back systems, how much should I be looking at for those ? By the way, the car has 147k miles and I paid $275 for it. Later.

Welcome. Sounds like you got a steal. You got a couple of options for an aftermarket cat-back exhaust. Check the posts this category from Aaron Garney about the system he's offering - looks very nice, everything Aaron offers seems top quality. There's also Brullen and I'm sure someone will post contact info. If either of those don't suit you, then you can easily get a local shop to fab a decent system. I recommend a 2 1/4" pipe, Magnaflow muffer and either a vortex tube or resonator between the cat and the muffler. Avoid chambered mufflers like the Flowmaster.

welcome to the group, man you gotta steal....good luck with the exhaust i've actually been looking to get one on mine here soon.
Flowmaster gives a nice mellow sound (ie cops can't hear you coming a mile away like some aftermarket mufflers). Is is really quite, but feels good on the car IMHO

Oh course, if Aaron had shown that cat-back system BEFORE I redid it a couple months ago... ... just have to figure out a reason to "have" to upgrade again
pdupler, you say to avoid flowmaster? any specific reasons? i dont care for loud sound. sparky why do you suggest flowmaster, any other reasons than the already mentioned reasons. thanks

Sorry, smoking crack or something...(probably my lack of sleep)

I ment the Magnaflow give nice mellow sound, avoid the flowmaster
I've got a 4" magnaflow single tip on my 82 with 2.25 piping from the cat back(but if I had known then I would have gone with 2.50 inch). I think I paid like $113 with shipping for the muffler and the custom pipe and muffler mount was around $250 or so.(woops thats including the cost of 2 new rear shocks so it was less actually) It's well worth the cost, it makes a big difference in the high end power and it sounds great! It's a little loud at first but after a coupple months use the sound lessens a bit. It's still loud enough to softly vibrate nearby windows when I take off and it sets off car alarms if I'm close enough :D sweeet! If you've go for it. Brian IN Fairfax, VA
I am running 2.5" crush bent from the collector back, High flow cat and a Skunk 2 "Muffler" if you can call it that.

It was pretty loud if I did not have the "cork" in it. Good performance though. And it doesnt have that high pitched sound of the ricers.

avoid the flowmaster
hey... watchit....

I personally like my flowmaster. It has a little in-cab resonation, but is quiet unless you really open it up, at which it does get loud.

I actually LIKE the sound of the flowmaster, just so long as its on YOUR car and not mine. The constant resonance inside the cabin tho can result in frayed nerves. Most people who think they'd like it wind up deciding otherwise.

I am not sure what model flowmaster I have, but it is one of the more quiet ones I have heard thusfar. I have much much less in-cab resonation than a 5.0 stang with dual flowmasters. I probably would have gone with something else, but since it was on when I purchased the car, flowmaster it is. =)

There is a video where you can hear my exhaust note and many different levels of throttle. The take-off is pretty loud, and the slalom is what it would sound like during daily driving, then at the end, you hear from 2000-6000rpm at WOT. (And give me a break, that was the first lap of my second autox ever, I am much faster now =)

I like my flowmaster too. It growls at idle and up to 2500rpm, but step on it and it sounds like ... well it's loud as hell. Near redline it's loud but not with a honda tincan sound but a nascar raspyness to it. Never heard a 6m-ge with any other exhaust and headers though, so not sure what any other muffler would sound like. But I do know my car is louder than any car in town aside from a few classic V8's.

If I had a recorder I'd record it just so I could hear it all day. lol. maybe post it here too... :p
