hey guys i was wondering what it was because i have heard of the 1jz but not the 1g-gte.Also i was wondering if anyone had done this swap before.i seem very interested in it but know nothing about the engine. oh and also if anyone knows what kind of hp and torque it makes that would be great. thanks

The 1G-GTE is a JDM-only engine which first appeared in the Soarer but was also used in practically all RWD six cylinder Toyotas at one time or another, including the GA70 Supra, Chaser, MkII, Cresta, etc.

It's a smallish 2 litre inline six featuring a DOHC 24 valve cylinder head, EFI, twin CT12 turbos, and an intercooler. There were several versions of the 1G-GTE but the most powerful version was rated at 210hp. More specs can be found here.

This engine existed only because of Japan's strange vehicle registration laws, which basically means it's much cheaper to own a 2 litre turbo car than a 3 litre NA car. That's why practically all manufacturers offer their larger cars with small turbocharged engines (eg Nissan has the RB20DET). These engines don't make sense outside of Japan which is why they're not exported.

As for swaps, they're popular here in Australia for smaller cars (usually Celicas) but I know of only one guy who's putting one in a MkII Supra. He occasionally posts here under the name JustCallMeFrank. He's putting a 1G-GTE in a JDM Celica XX which came with a G series engine from the factory, so the swap will be relatively easy for him. If you didn't have a GA60 Celica XX to start with I don't think this swap would be worth the trouble.

From what I have gleaned, think of it essentially as a 4A-GE with an extra two cylinders.

No parts for it in the US unless you import them, but I have heard they share a lot with the 4A engines.

It sounds like a lot of fun for a small car, as it sounds like a high-revving smooth little engine that is more reliable than the 7M.

well it seems like the engine was like a child mishap in the toyota family. thanks alot for all of guys input. i just thought that it would produce a little more excitement because it was twin turbo but maybe not. oh well thanks.i might consider a 1jz swap or stick with the 7m.

well with that said i was wondering if any of you guys have done a 1jz swap and could give me a site or could go step by step to show how to do the steps. thanks

He's got the best step by step I've seen. Its a 2JZ but I know it should work the same w/a 1JZ, I saw Norbie using a spare 1JZ block on his site :) http://www.norbie.net/Project2JZ/

It should also help you decide on whether you really want to go and take the steps and cost of doing it. Well, 1JZ you say. I noticed they're much cheaper than the 2JZ-GTE's. hth

*slap* 47/50? Wow, mad drifting sk33lz takes out 3% of the weight with all the hot air they got? No, a 6cyl would not be cool in a rollaGTS. It'd bone up the natural balance of the car, raise the weight, and make it push. Now, Want cool? Toss a 3s-gte in it. Now that's cool.

BEAMS 3s-ge with a turbo would be even better, plus it's already RWD :twisted:
