I bought new tires for my stock P type wheels on the red L type about 6 months ago. Stiff sidewalls are more important to me than width (stock 5M in this car), so I went with H rated 215/60 Geostars on the back and Achilles Platinum 195/65 on the front. I have to tell you I am VERY pleased with the Achilles and wish I had just put them on all 4 wheels. I was afraid it would look bad to have something that narrow on the back, but they look much better than the wider lower profile Geostars and perform well. I'd recommend these Indonesian-made tires for the stock wheels on a daily driver.

If you need stock or wider tires and are willing to deal with the softer sidewalls (better for drag, worse for corners), Coker made BFGoodrich Silvertowns are the only choice I saw.

OK, here is a July 2014 update:
My restored 84 Supra has been sitting and running on what was possibly the absolute last set of new Michelin Pilot tires in 225/60HR14. At 10 plus years old, they are aging out and showing spider web cracking in the sidewalls so its time for me to replace them. Doing some research online and talking to a couple of local tire dealers lead to this list:
STOCK SIZE 225/60-14: pretty much limited to the B F Goodrich radial TA, S rated, Cooper used to have their Cobra in that size but it appears to be gone , and reportedly no better than the BFG TA, Cobras were S rated. Yoko Avid ST gone.
STEP UP TO 235/60R14: BFG TA available in this size as is the Cooper Cobra GT, and Mastercraft Avenger, (A Cooper sister brand). There are also a Hercules brand, a Maxxus Marauder brand and a couple of other private label brands like Laramie, Tempra, etc in this size, all S rated.
STEP DOWN TO 215/60R14: If you can live with the slightly smaller size, choices get better: H rated tires are available such as the Riken Raptor, the Geostars mentioned above, and the Nexen CP641 directional radial tire. Other brands, mostly private label, exist in this size such as Federal. And, you can get the BFG radial TA in this size, but why would you want to with 225 and 235 sizes available.
GO TO A MORE COMMON SIZE: According to the rep at Discount Tire, the 205/70R14 tire will work, but its a bit taller and narrower than stock 226/60r14. A tire size comparator is available here:
http://tire-size-conversion.com/tire-size-calculator/
This will let you compare tire sizes. A few more mainstream tires are available in this size such as the Michelin Defender, as well as Kumho, Falken, Firestone, and Uniroyal options. In case you didn't know, the brands Uniroyal, B F Goodrich and Riken are owned by Michelin. As for me, I am leaning toward the 215/60r14 H rated Riken Raptors. If anyone has any additions or corrections to this list, please jump in here.

UPDATE: August 2014
If anybody cares, here is an update. The Nexen CP641 tires in 215/60-14 are discontinued according to the Nexen rep I spoke with when I called them. There may be some old stock around. The Riken Raptors in 215/60-14 are very hard to get, but the Discount Tire chain opened a store near me and were able to bring them in, so that's what I went with to replace my tired aging spider webbed cracked Michelins. My usual tire dealers said the Raptors were not available through any of their distributors, even though Michelin customer service said there were some in a warehouse in Houston Texas. The Raptors seem to be decent tires, but I have not subjected them to any hard stress yet.
BFG TAs are still available in 235, 225 and 215/60-14 if an S rated tire is acceptable to you.

I use this calculator and I'm now running 195/70r14's on my 83. I have stock tires on the rear and 205/60r14's on the front of my 86.

Not sure how available they are but the 205/60's work out great on the car IMO, and I wouldn't mind running them all the way around. The 195/70's are an inch narrower, but they are probably more available than anything, and not as pricey.

If I had a set of these 14x6 Z wheels I'd really like to have, the 195/70's would be perfect...

Just checked again to see what is out there...

The only sticky 14's that fit on tirerack these days aren't remotely streetable... Keep in mind our stock 225/60's are supposed to be between 24.5-24.75" tall, give or take.
Toyo R888 225/50-14 V rated race tires, 22.8" tall for $164.50 each: https://www.tirerack.com/tires/tire...5VR4R888&vehicleSearch=false&fromCompare1=yes

BFGoodrich Radial TA's can be had in a few sizes, all white letter, H rated, and overpriced. http://www.tirerack.com/tires/tires...TARWL2V2&vehicleSearch=false&fromCompare1=yes
215/60-14 24.2" $127.66
225/60-14 24.7" $115.20
235/60-14 25.1" $130.68
245/60-14 25.6" $146.40

There are a few other street options in 14's, none are great though they are at least cheaper than the bfg's.
235/60-14 cooper cobras(white letter, T rated) $103.99: http://www.summitracing.com/parts/coo-39608/overview/
235/60-14 mastercraft avenger(white letter, T rated) $99.97: http://www.summitracing.com/parts/mft-39708/overview/

Those jerks down under in Australia still have some decent looking maxxis tires in 215/235/245 60-14: http://www.maxxistyres.com.au/tyredetails.php?id=3&cat=1

My opinion-BFG T/A's are an awful tire most of us just settle for. About to purchase some Raptors in 215/60.
Did you get the Riken Raptors? How do you like them?

Bought some new tires to replace the old cracked BFG's. Too bad the car is stored for winter. Good reviews along with a cheap price, I went for it.

General ALTIMAX RT43 195/70R14

Altimax have good reviews, but skinny (stock size). Thoughts appreciated...

Falken AZENIS RT615K+ - SIZE: 195/60R14 for $91 each on tirerack are 23.2" tall and killer performance tires, still only BFG's in OEM 225/60 24.7" tall though.

Toyo PROXES R888 - SIZE: 225/50R14 $137 on tirerack and 22.8" tall, also an awesome performance tire.

Cooper Cobra 235/60 14's still available through tirerack for $101 each at 25" tall

These are, in fact, great performance tires, but I would not recommend them for a street car unless you want the sound of a whirring helicopter overhead at anything over 50 mph. This sound can be attenuated somewhat if you have the R888s on the rear only. If these tires are on all four, however, be ready for the "helicopter effect" road noise, the inability to handle wet road ways well and less than optimal performance at anything less than 50-degrees F.

Thanks for the input Ken, i agree on all counts about the r888's. They're also rock hard so give a terrible ride, and they're so sticky they grab every little rock and throw i at the underside of your car. Anything 200 treadwear or less seems to have those same characteristics, i love my Hankook RS4's on my 17's, but there are definitely some tradeoffs.
