Hey all,
In my journeys through Craigslist and Facebook looking for a project car a listing caught my eye. Two 1982 Toyota Supras in ROUGH condition for $3000. For both. My only issue I have run into in my research figuring out if I should buy them is parts.

The interiors are shot and look to need complete replacement.
The paint is in decent shape but will need touch ups.
The motors are unknown, haven't seen them yet.

I suppose my question is though, how difficult would it be to find parts for these cars? Are they worth the $3000?

If the interiors are shot, those are some of the hardest parts to source. Anything made out of plastic, rubber or vinyl that fits only a Supra we call "holy grail" parts in reference to the epic search legend. A really good shop could reupholster the seats, the door panels, the rear seat side panels, and even the headliner, but all the injection-molded trim, rotational molded crash pads and extruded weatherstrips require the rare earth element "unobtainium".

The rough Supras you found might be worth $1,500 each in parts (depending on condition, what's useable vs not) which could help if you find a better one later. Or maybe if you find a rust-bucket up in Canada with a good interior to swap over. But I suggest that you buy one that's already a solid #3 or better condition (no rust and you'd be proud to drive it to a cruise night as-is) and then spend the next few years bringing it up to a #2 (winning trophies at local charity car shows). If you really want a "project", you'd be surprised how much work and money there is just between a #3 and #2.

Post some pics. $3000 is al lot for a couple of headaches. Or, find out how long it's been for sale. If a long time---that tells you something. Nobody's biting.

Simple answer is not really.

Long answer; getting some parts for these cars has gotten very difficult to the point where I have both my cars on racks now and both ran when I parked them. Both need work, neither were perfect when purchased, and if I were ever to buy another I would get one that was fully restored and painted, and bone stock.

It may be wise to just find a car that actually works, is complete and only needs a new owner. Provided these are now "classic" cars and that parts are a pain to get in many instances, make your selection wisely.

Also, never buy a car in the evening, in the rain or in poor lighting conditions, because these hide many bodywork sins.
