Never having done any road rallies before, I don't have a helmet or goggles. Can anyone give me an idea where I can get this stuff by next week at a reasonable price?

Thanks to any of you experienced racers who could give a n00b some good advice!

P.S. As the show-and-shine is the next day - where's the closest car wash (do-it-yourself kind preferred) to the Luxor?

These guys have pretty good prices;

http://soloracer.com/

&

http://www.helmetcity.com

Although since you need it in a hurry you might just want to go to Summit and get one (<2 days with ground in CA). Just check to make sure if they require an SA or M rated helmet. SAs are more expensive but if you don't know which they are the highest rating and should be accepted either way. Some places might require a full face helmet as well. My best advice is to keep in on the asphalt shiny side up :p . I'd ask Chris about the car wash thing. He has posted on the Mk2 list in the past where one was close by.

Oh also too make sure you have the car prepped as well. I'm sure they'll have some type of car tech for safety equip. You need to have the battery tie down bar (hope you fixed that  ) all the nuts and bolts tight etc for a safety inspection. Pump up the air pressure in the tires for on the track.

FYI we have a downloadable Tech form on the SILV website. Be sure to check that as that is what will be checked at the track.

It is your responsibility to make sure your car is ready for the track.

Bob,

Re: Car Wash locations.

I know of 2 locations, both of them are east of the Luxor on Tropicana. One is called Bubbles (just off the corner of Tropicana & Maryland), the other one (forgot the name of it) is about another mile east or so near this place called "I think" the Terrible Herbalist (sp??). I would recommend this one over Bubbles. Last year, I had some issues w/ that location. Mainly because of the water in their system, I then spent another 2 hours trying to get the hard water spots off the paint (good thing I had my bottle of Maguiars Body Scrub with me). Had no issues w/ the other location, used them in 2001 & didn't have any water issues.

LMK if you want to use that location on Thurs night Bob & I can show you how to get there!!!! If all else fails, I'll have a box of cleaning/detail supplies that I always bring w/ me every year.

And just a FYI for all the newbies coming this year... The intersection of Tropicana & Maryland just about has everything you may need for your trip here!!!! A Car Wash, A Von's (Safeway) grocery store (for food & liquids you may need for the weekend), and a Shuck's Auto Parts if you need cleaning/detail supplies, or if you need...... parts.... :D

Chris,

I belive it is Terrible Herbst. It is a very nice place. Jeff Sawyer and I washed our cars there last year. It just looked to us like a nicer place.

Chris: Much appreciated...! I may well take you up on that offer...I suspect that the Redpra will definitely need a wash after a day at the track.

I'll send you a PM with my cell # just in case we can't communicate over the net after the weekend.

Nope not yet. The cars just been sitting in the garage the last few weeks. I haven't been too motivated to work on the car lately. I think its probably going to be sitting till next year. I'm either going to swap in another engine or try and register the car in Oregon or both. I think the reason its not passing is from the increased compression. I don't feel this engine is really worth the money/effort to unmodify it. I've got a major itch for more power these days anyway grunt .... grunt .... grunt :)

I don't know what it's like in your neck of the woods but the local CHiPs and county mounties down here are becoming more of a PITA for people with out-of-state plates (no doubt at least partly due to the budget fiasco we're in, I'm sure). My neighbor lives in Montana for at least 4-5 months out of the year and has all of his cars except an old beater pick-em-up truck registered up there. He gets harassed by the cops on a fairly regular basis when he's in town.

Good luck, but whatever you do, don't get rid of the car. That would be a damn shame after all you've done with it. My $0.02 worth.

Yeah I think I'm stuck with it for now no matter what. It looks like I'll finally be doing a 7M swap this winter. I just bought pretty much everything but the motor to do a swap (JDM engine for the rest). I'm doing it the hard way from loose parts. The smog ref kinda scared me away from doing a 2JZ conversion. If I switch states with the car I'm going transfer the title to my uncles name in Oregon. If I get pulled over I'm just going to say I'm borrowing his car  . In the 1000 miles or so I drive the car each year I think my chances of getting caught are pretty slim. Good Luck in Vegas. I sure wish I was going this year.

Bob,

Which helmet did you get? I need to get one myself for the road course also. Hopefully I will have a car all preped for the track and make it. So far it looks like Mom's Black 91T will be going, my 85 isn't up to all the track inspections, too many oil leaks. :( If I do make it, then I will be leaving sometime wed afternoon/evening. We should get together sometime along the way and drive up together. I'm out here in Riverside.

Anyone have a helmet I can borrow for the track?

Anybody know if they are allowing co-pilots at the track. That might be fun.

Josh: They're quick!! I got the helmet today - it's a simple Pyrotech full-face, black...will definitely do just fine - $150.

Would like to drive up with you if possible....check my last post in the Vegas thread.

Someone lookin' for a tech form? Although it's not the one for SILV, I think if you can pss this one, you'll pass at any other track.

http://www.nasaproracing.com/images/rules-forms/form_hpde_tech.pdf

The biggest problem is dripping oil. Track officials get pretty crazy when they have oil dipping on their tracks! And this is with good reason too, you really don't wanna come diving into a corner, hard on the brakes, and find yourself with a loss of traction!!!
Damn I wish I could make it to SILV, even if its just for the road track! Post pics as soon as it's over guys!!!

Flyin,
Yea, the oil leaks and suspension clunks will keep me from bringing my 85 to the track. :x I wish it would have been ready. Hopefully next year if they do this again the 85 will be ready with some nice wide rims and tires and the front and rear BBKs. 8)

Bob,
I see the Full Face Solid M2000 for $164.99 Is that the one you got from helmet city?

That's it...I was going to go for the open face helmet with an add-on shield, but the guy said he'd drop the price on the full-face to $150; he said it's a better helmet anyway. So I went for it.
