what parts go on a 6mge. i mean i can't go into a parts store and say i need a water pump for a 6mge. is a 6 mge just a 5mge head with a 7mge block?

Why not? Supply any other info they ask and you should get your water pump.

The auto parts store will want year make and model info. (they will get confused if you don't tell them, so just go with it) Tell them it's for an 85 Supra w/5MGE. That will get you the correct parts for most of the engine, just not the crank, connecting rods and front crankshaft seal.

You may occasionally need to take something in to match up, (belts maybe) but between 5M and 7M applications they can find it if they are really curious enough to go beyond the matchup.
