What's the correct colour for a billboard sticker?

2003 Views 27 Replies 10 Participants Last post by  onemancrew
Hey guys,

I have a black 85 car that was repainted at some time, and it doesn't have a billboard sticker on the hatch. Can someone tell me what the correct colour would be for a black car? In case it matters, the dashboard is black, the passenger compartment carpet is grey, the cargo area carpet is black, and the seats are grey with black backing.

Thanks in advance.

I want to say grey or silver BUT I would ask our SME Tanya to be sure...

I swear there is another recent thread discussing billboard letter colors. I can't find it right now. On my 86 SDR supra, the billboard color is black. I believe all other colors got light gray/silver billboard stickers. But agree need an OG/SME to confirm!
I think you are right that there was only black for light colored paint and light grey for darker shades, but that's going from memory (which is the problem with becoming an OG). 👴

Thanks for the thoughts on this.

You can find pictures and YouTube videos online, but in the pictures it's really hard to tell the difference between white, grey, or silver lettering.

I'm surprised someone with an original paint black car hasn't chimed in yet!
This one that was on BAT has 10+ pics of the tail. It look grey to me. Definitely not white, but maybe silver. I think I'll go with a grey one.

Agreed with grey, but a light gray. The silver has a bit of reflective in it, which this one does not have.
Same on Tanya's blog.

The parts lists on toyodiy.com show that there are 2 colours.

Product Rectangle Font Parallel Magenta

The codes shown in parenthesis are paint codes for the cars.

CJSREDPRA and Tanya's The "Official" Paint Code/Pictures Thread

Now, as for the 'Beige' decal, I have NO idea what that is about! Anyone?
The list price of $29 is WAY lower than the other part prices.
And, of course, none of these are available any longer.

Searching these part numbers do show that these are the correct decal part numbers:

So, Gloss Black from 82-86 is code '202' which should be the Gray coloured decal.
According to the parts lists, anyway!

Okay, 1982 and 1983 used a small decal on the right side of the deck.

Automotive exterior Window Bumper Font Electric blue

I assume that this is 'Beige'.

The correct part number would be 75596-14060-05 and this would be used on ALL colours in 1982 and 1983.
And the price would logically be a lot less that the full width decal used on 84 and up.

Awesome, thanks for all the help on this. I'll go ahead and order a grey one.

Thanks for the research confirmation. I keep exhibiting signs of old age, like memory loss, and so at least I've remembered one thing correctly for the month of August. ;)

For reference, here are 2 pictures of the grey that is on an 8B4 car that would be the same shade as you need for a 202 car. One picture is with camera flash, one without.

A note about ordering a new hatch banner - there are NO vendors doing OEM correct reproductions that I know of right now. Some are very close to original - like Raptor Racing - but still have subtle differences noticeable to a purist/OG. If that is OK with you, let me know because I have a couple that were sent to me as test to compare with my original. You can have them for free just shipping. Also, many reproductions of the grey you need are actually silver

I was thinking about doing everything the right way by measuring each letter as it was applied originally and reproducing a set of individual letters, but it came out to be cost prohibitive for the few that would want to go to that level of originality

That's awesome, thanks @suprarossa

I was planning on ordering one from Raptor: Search results for: 'billboard' . Megazip seems to have the OEM version: 75996-14120-03 - Stripe, Rear Body Back, Toyota OEM | Megazip.net . But for $200 USD by the time it gets to me I think I'll go with the Raptor version for 50 Canadian kopeks. Plus they're just down the road from me so I can pick it up and see what they got going on in the store.

I'm not too worried about it being a perfect copy of the original, as long as it's close. Of course I'd rather it be more correct than less correct, which is why I asked the original question about colour.

Thanks again!
non-metallic grey vinyl is possible through George @ Raptor, you'll need to ask him to order it on his next run of hatch decals, and they may be slightly more expensive since very few folks order or ask for that color and usually go with the met. silver vinyl.
Note that the grey vinyl that is available is very close but not an exact match to the oem decal. You would only be able to tell if you have a new oem decal and a Raptor decal side-by-side.

EDIT:
I guess I should also add that the repro decals are NOT printed on clear like the oem decals, they are cut vinyl in the color you order.
On a related note, is this what everyone is looking to get?

Black decal installed on 2-tone supra, should be installed on light colors only, this is just for reference:

Grey vinyl on bottom, upper rectangles are shades of grey printed on clear:

Wood Rectangle Flooring Composite material Window

As you can see, the colors are not great for the grey print on clear, it really needs to be silkscreened to be correct, which is how the oem decals were created. Digital printed decals on clear vinyl with a white base get skewed by the color they are installed on. With it installed on a black vehicle, the vinyl is much darker grey due to the fact that white ink printers are not opaque but more translucent, allowing the vehicle's paint color to darken the print.

I've messed with this on and off for years and never felt it was ready for prime time. A bad decal that doesn't live up to "oem reproduction" status only ruins the name of the company who sells it, and I wouldn't want to have anyone claiming George @ Raptor is selling substandard stuff, so I have never released these decals. Further issues are the fact that I have not seen a true oem decal installed on a hatch in almost a dozen years, so sizing would not be 100% identical until I was able to trace and scan an original decal.

I have an 84 that is burnished bronze and the sticker is silver.
If it isn't a silkscreened ink over a clear decal, its not an oem decal. And if its any sort of metallic color, its not oem either. They only came in two colors, a grey and a black ink and were silkscreened over clear vinyl, the original decals look like @suprarossa 's images above.

I actually saw an 83 this past weekend and it had the 84 / 85 style billboard sticker in metallic grey. That colour looked really good, so I'm now thinking I'll go with the silver. Not sure if the sticker was from Raptor though.

If it was from Raptor, it should be a metallic silver decal, hard to represent through photos online, but it should be this color here:

Atmosphere Thunder Cloud Thunderstorm Atmospheric phenomenon

Silver on the left is against medium grey (NON-metallic color that Toyota used from the factory) on the right.
