It's finally time to restore my 85 from top to bottom. First things first, where can I find a good deal on a 5m-ge engine, mine's dead. Any websites or places ? I could use any help if anyone is in the san antonio area... Are there any specials for members of this site ? I plan on fully restoring so websites or info on all parts for the car will be helpful.

if your 5M is dead I would go with a 6M instead, there is one guy here on the forum that can get you a 6M. He goes by the screen name of Racetek82

Well how dead is it? Often the original engine can be rebuilt by a local machine shop more reasonably than you can buy a reconditioned engine. It just all depends on what your engine needs as far as machine work and parts. But for instance if there's a piston rod sticking out a big hole in the side of the block, then you might be better off finding a whole replacement. One popular option is to replace the 5m with a used 6m engine from one of the importers. The 6m is externally nearly identical but has a longer stroke crankshaft and shorter rods making it 3.0liters instead of 2.8 and about 30 hp more. Just realize they are USED engines with no way to know how many miles or what condition. They make great cores for rebuild but some have had success just freshening all new seals and rings before installing in car. For Toyota parts, call Jeff Watson at Jay Marks Toyota in Houston - 1-800-327-2087 and mention Supra Owners Group. He gives us basically jobber prices on Toyota parts and he knows Supras inside and out so more likely to get you the right part the first time.

ok, to make a long story short, I own an 02 se-r spec v sentra, but payments got outta hand. So that's where nismo came from, deep inside i've always been a trd fan. Anyways, basically from what i've heard, most of my engine's seals broke causing a major oil leak that destroyed the engine. I haven't had time to break the core open to see the extent of the damage, but the engine did have 140,000 miles on it. The other thing is, isn't it cheaper to get a used engine than to overhaul the used one. I've been out of the supra crowd for a while and I'm trying to gain as much knowledge as possible to tackle this project correctly.

One more thing, does the 6m engine need a different wirng harness, or is it a straight drop in over the 5m ?

Its pretty much a streight drop in, you have to sort of fabricate the throttel linkage, not hard and thats about it, some ppl put 210 injectors out of corolla's to richen the mixture a bit to make up for the 5M computer. As far as I know thats it for differences. Oh if you advance the timing to 15+ degrees run high pump octaine, I have the delapitated head of a 6M at 16+ degrees that was run on 87 for far to long.

There is no need to modify the linkages, since you will be using the stock 5M intake pieces. Even with a 6M manifold, there are no mods needed. his might differ for canadian MK2's.

15+ degrees advance??? lolz..and on 87??? ur insane..ahaha.. I have never run anything lower than 89 on my cars, and that's juss cuz I was low on cash. Our baby's deserve the best =)

This place has pretty good prices too. They also have front cuts of the 2jz with auto trans specifically for conversions. You've got to call for that price though. Brian

I have 2JZ's also...with auto trans in stock...with and without VVT-i. prices vary a bit, but most sell for well under 3k. I get front cuts of all sorts too. Last I checked there were a quite a few 1JZ clips as well.

ok, so when it comes down to it, i'm a driver, not too much of an under the hood guy. So. with that said, my dad says to look for a long block and we'll go from there, so where to find a long block ?

the motors i sell are long blocks. Long blocks consist of the bottom end (block) and the top end (head). all other externals and accessories come from your stock 5M.

so the extent of the damage of the engine is still undetermined, but I believe that I fell victim to the blown head gasket. So is any of the old engine salvageable ?

Unless you are really strapped for cash then I would buy a 6m get a 6m comp (if you can). Then rebuild the 6m drop it in and yo should have a solid car (unless it is rusting). Or take the plunge and go for the 7m-gte probably not too much more and you will love the power (or so I hear, I'm still lookin for a good engine).
