I have been looking into possible motor swaps for a mark I supra. I was planning on the 7m-gte, but this is such a popular motor. I was searching for other Toyota motors, when I came across a 1g-gte with 5-speed tranny and ecu for $1000 shipped. That is half the price of a turbo 7m and comes with about 200 hp and tq. I know it is a 2.0 liter twin turbo, but I am having a hard time finding much more info on it. Any one know a good source for 1g info?
Some general questions...
How much lighter is the 1g than the 7m? (2.0 liter vs. 3.0 liter, big weight diff?)
What motors use compatable parts? (Since 1g is strictly jdm)
Any good sites that sell 1g parts?
Thank you.
As others have mentioned, check w/ the guys on Supramania.
Aside from MKIII owners in Japan, the only other guys who have heavily dealt w/ GA70's, are the New Zealand MKIII owners & they ended up getting quite a few GA70 JDM exports.
Otherwise, there is really not a whole lot of aftermarket support for the 1G-GTE's. There is "some" stuff that is more or less available in Japan, but just from looking inside all 3 of my HyperRev magazines, their is only "so much" aftermarket support.... Assuming it's available anymore. Why is this??? Because the hardcore Japanese tuner guys know that a 7M or any JZ series motor is the better bang for the buck & the stuff that is available in the aftermarket world supports this.
Now here's the interesting part... Power to weight ratio (don't know why I didn't think of this before) I would "think" that a 1G-GTE would be a reasonably decent match inside a MKI.
Problem is that I don't know of anyone who has done a 1G conversion on a MA45/MA46/MA47 MKI (much less the even harder to find MA55/MA56 versions). 1G motors also never came on MKI's (yes, even on MKI CelicaXX's), they all had M series motors. So you (to my knowledge) would be the 1st to see what fits & what needs to be modified or fabricated (like for instance, finding a front crossmember that will work in a MKI/1G conversion. Or wondering if a front drop, or center drop oil pan "might" work w/ a MKI M series crossmember....).
Good luck on whatever you decide on.
