heyas,

my clutch slips like a dog in 3/4/5 and sometimes in 2nd, if iam going slow enough, so im not driving my car much until i get a new clutch!!

from wat i seen on the net a 7m-ge clutch will bolt on to a 5m-ge, also from what i know, a 7m is just a 5m block bored out, is that right??(aswell as a few other things)

Should i go for a 225mm clutch or a 235mm clutch.

Im opting for a clutch that gives good driveability but also that i can take to the track once every while. I would like a 5/6-puck clutch with a slightly heavier pressure plate(700-800kg).

main Q is if the 7m stuff will bolt up to the 5m, if so, that makes sourcing things sooo much easier.

cheers

one is 235 and the other 225, whats the difference, i also see that the 235mm clutch says 40% over standard clutch, whilst the 225 says 30%, i have calculated that 700kg is in fact 30% over standard but dont understand the reason of having a larger cover size... can anybody inform me on this??

cheers

heyas again,

i have another problem...went down to a few local Jap performance shops (Xspeed and Cypher Industries) trying to get a rough idea of pricing and labour, but now the problem:

the clutch disc size, 225mm and 235mm, they both have different spline OD.

I have been told the 7m is 236mm
1j is 240
2j is 240

and the 1g is the same, on the 235mm i think.

and the only way to tell the size is by taking out the g/box!!!

and that they all run different flywheels!!

does anyone know for sure that i can just slap in a 7m clutch EVEN IF the disc size is different??

they way it seems is if i give it to the shop i wont have it for a week or two as they find out wat size, etc. but if i know for sure i can just order it in, wait for it, then take the car there and have it bak the next day!!

thanxs

according to the books that both shops have there are different sized plates, which means the flywheels are different sizes, so if i have a 225 and the 7m is 236 its still 1mm bigger than the other 235mm variant, which means, again, another flywheel!

do you see what im saying??

i have a 225mm plate, then it cant be the same, since there are 2 variants....it even says it on the exedy website and xtreme clutches and a few others!

You will have a 225mm clutch/flywheel combination. Only the later 5MGE's had the 240mm clutch.

Just go to Coventrys/Supercheap/Repco and ask for a new clutch to suit a 1984 Supra. You *may* need to trade in your old one, been a long time since I've ordered one. Don't bother with anything 'performance'. It should cost under $200.

it makes sense, until Xspeed rang me and told me the 225mm didnt fit, i have the 236mm, which also now means i have to buy the 236mm clutch and i cant return the 225mm, sucks, no Supra cruise this weekend for me!

I'm not a 100% sure but I'd be very surprised if the 1982 5MGE had a 240mm clutch when our 1985 5ME only had a 225mm clutch.
If you want to be 100% sure you'll need to pull the box off and measure it.

Don't bother with a performance clutch because a) you don't need it, and b) you'll end up breaking something if you use it.
At the most just buy a 'heavy duty' or 'uprated' version of the stocko.

mmmmkay, yea i was just gona buy a heavy duty piece, heavy duty will be good for some light track use so i guess a serious clutch isnt needed!

just want something that is higher clamp force but not much harsher on engagement, so i was looking at the Xtreme clutches, or the exedy Cypher was offering!

thanxs peewee

The 225, 236 or 240 NON TURBO, 5m, 5MGE, or 7MGE clutches will all work on the 5m flywheel-the larger covers have inset bolt holes:zzzzz: I am assuming you are surfacing flywheel? If so, then measure it yourself if you need confirmation.

the shops told me the splines outside diameter, which means the flywheels are different??

are there any risks with using a 240mm plate on a 225mm flywheel, i guess it just means i need the larger cover, right?

F#k this is confusing, the shop tells me one thing, you guys tell me another, i would expect you guys to know more since we have the same car sorta thing.

ok so the 7m-ge is the same as the 5m-ge, ok......how bout the different sized input shaft out side diameter??

225 is 28.9mm
235 is 29.8mm

or so im told, by the exedy catalogue...or is the 7m the same as the 5m on the splines outside diameter??

i want to buy a clutch and take it to the shop to put it, i dont want to find out that i have the wrong clutch, or it wont fit....just want to make sure!!

as long as the 7mge fits the 5mge and you are 1000000% sure, i trust you!

w5x series gearboxes had same input shaft size-So I "think" the clutch sellers are confusing 7mge(N/A) w5x applications with 7MGTE(Turbo)R154 applications. You need a "pull type" clutch, with a small input shaft size. Or, there are more choices available in OZ, my info pertains to North America, and I am all wet.....

what do you have done to the engine... if still stock just buy a stock clutch and turn the flywheel unless you have a turbo or something on it

CarFreek:

ok i get it, i see how that works, thanxs

engine wise, it has extractors and full ehxaust system, 3" intake pipe (AFM-TB), pod filter and soon it'll get tuned!
im buying a turbo this week, but whether or not i go to the effort to 5m-gte it is sumthin else, i dont think the result will be worth the effort!

iunno, they were on the car when i bought it, they have no brand on them!! so i dont know much about extractors in Aus, besides im a turbo boi, which leaves me with even less idea!! since i would go to a shop and get it custom made, but they do look mass production, but ill have another lookie tomorrow!

just got bak from Xspeed, listen up bois, the 225mm clutch COVER doesnt line up with the dowels in the block, but the clutch disc fits on the shaft, so that means that i have to buy a 236mm cover to use with the clutch disc, which means, that i have to buy 2 clutches everytime i mess 1 up, because the 236mm KIT has the 28.9mm input shaft OD (which is r154) whilst mine (W5X) has the 29.8mm OD shaft...so now im waiting on the cover to finish my installtion off.
