was on the free way and my wife is looking for something in the back seat and kicks the shifter in to reverse. i quickly threw it back in to drive, but the car did engage reverse for a second. now it feels like its not shifting right and there is a wine, and reverse makes the car vibrate. what can i do?? i don't have the facilities to drop and replace a tranny.

i have a funny feeling that you need to drop and replace your tranny... I've done it with the car on jack stands and ramps and with a floor jack. It's not easy, but it is doable.

How did she defeat reverse lock? Strong legged woman! Your tranny is toast. At least drop pan and look for chunks of metal. Enjoy it while it lasts, it will quit movin eventually.

Could have a loose shifter like mine and the reverse lock did not work. A long time ago I did it to a pos ford rental car, messed up the trans big time.

Interesting. I had an incident in the silver supra years ago where the shifter got shoved all the way into park at 50mph. The engine shut off by itself, I coasted to a stop. Restarted the engine, shifted into drive, went on about my business. No damage to tranny. I just figured there must've been some sort of safety mechanism built into the tranny to prevent damage from just such an occurance.

Now I feel that much better about older domestics. I was going down a long mountain road in my old 73 El Camino that wasnt all that steep, but it went on for miles. I decided to push the shifter up into neutral and just coast with the motor idling. At 65 mph, I bumped it into reverse for about a second...maybe a second and a half. The TH400 went into reverse with no hesitation, squalling the tires. I quickly rectified the situation. I was lucky I could start the old turd in neutral because it DID stall the 400 mouse motor out. I never had one thing wrong with the tranny after the incident. It sounds like your tranny couldnt take that kind of shock bro. It sucks, but yer gonna have to pull it. Any vibration coming from the tranny is not good. When you hear your tranny whining, then shes bout to give up the ghost. Very rarely can you cure whining with replacing the filter, but you also have the vibrating to deal with. Something is broke. The part has more than likely been crushed into mud and is clogging yer filter causing the pump to whine. Dont wait for it to come apart.

I don't know, man. Sounds like the tranny's toast. I don't know how different the auto and manual trannies are, but we basically did a W58 on jackstands in a garage. Plenty of room under there. Took about three hours, driving in to driving out.

Sorry to hear this man. Yikes. In 93, A couple Marines and myself were driving a government van (think it was an Aerostar) down the freeway, and one of the guys was f'n around with the auto column shifter. I thought he'd put it into a lower gear, and quickly put it back up a gear....in REVERSE!. The van stalled, and we pulled over to the side of the road. I put the van in park, and started it up. It drove fine after that.

I can attest to the american trannies, a friend of mine had a 54 chevy with basically a metal rod for a shifter, I found out that the metal dash+ my forehead = pain. he bumbed it into reverse going down the hill at Vet Mem Golf course(Walla Walla), I wound up seeing stars. Auto tranny with whine and vibe = bad Ju Ju. My mother tanked a tranny doing the same thing. One must pull pan and inspect for disloged peices and whatnot. Most likely one must drop the tranny, my brother and I changed the 400 in my Nova with it on stands, just remember that if you drain the fluid it weighs less, and thus easier to pull, plus it's less messy.

Good Luck

One of my old job duties in early 90s was purchasing "core" pieces from automatic transmissions. If you bought correct pieces, you could often repair piece. Transmission shops would buy these rebuilt pieces to save on $$$$. Toyota A40+ series ODs were on my no-buy list. The center support/Od section are both thin wall aluminum pieces. They dont like changing direction quickly.

Well, I've got a good auto tranny for sale but if you're feeling that you don't have the facilities, then it's a moot point. A cheap floor jack from Kragens for $20 will suffice to lower the thing. Read the manual---it's not rocket science.
