Ok,

This is basically a rambling topic due to some recent news I have received.

My Grandfather (age 61) who I am close to since my dad wasnt around at all. Was just diagnosed with Stage IV Lung Cancer. He was diagnosed on Sept 28th.

He lives nearly 2 hours away but I am out there at least once, if not more a month to spend a night or two. We recently were fishing on their lake(Gun Lake) and playing cards till 3 am. He had no health problems in August what so ever. He developed a "Cold" in mid September and was completely fine otherwise.

Come late Spetember (week of 27th) he thought he had pneumonia due to the cold getting worse. He went in Monday and they decided to do a catscan. Tuesday they had the results.....

He was incurable stage IV Lung Cancer. Past the point of operating all they can do is prolong his life a little. And its not going to be pleasant for him, us anybody.

This was shocking for all of our family as we have always pictured him being around a lot longer due to his good health. The sad truth is its a VERY fast acting cancer.

One week ago we were all initailly shocked and the family was out there visiting, he was pretty stressed out and had to get his lung drained that day. He was woried but didnt know how bad it was, or would get. Besides being slighty drained from the stress he was up and around, his joking self.

This Saturday just 4 days later.....

He can barely walk, he wont eat, cant sleep ,and his vision is blurred all the time. One weeks time and he is almost confined to his couch. He goes in for Chemo this morning.

The whole point of this post is for me to vent, and also warn at least one other person about what will happen to your family, husband/wife, kids, parents, brothers, friends etc. If you dont stop smoking. It will happen quick and its not going to be easy for anyone to basically watch you become someone else in 1 weeks time. He is in a lot of pain and thats terrible to watch happen to anybody.

The sad truth is that 2/3rds are diagnosed in stage 4. A person dies every 20 minutes from Lung Cancer. Its past the point of being operated on or cured. The expectancy without chemo is less than 6 months. Unless it has reached the brain then just days to a few weeks.

If you take chemo its 75-90% make it 6 months.Only 43% make it one year and less than 24% make it 2 years. There are only a handfull of documented cases that were ever cured once in stage 4. So thats the odds, and there not to good.

Besides the addiction just be remeinded everyday of your family and think about them wanting you to be around to enjoy and visit for many years. Smoking has a chance to stop that very short and very fast.

Like he told me on Tuesday (9/28/04) He "always thought it would be the next guy"

That was the last real conversation I had with him.

Dont do this to your family.

Very sorry to hear about your news. Most people see LC as a "risk" of smoking. When you look at the numbers you see it's really more of a sure thing than a risk. The kind of cancer that smoking causes was almost non existant before smoking and air pollution. They also happen to be the most aggressive forms of lung cancer.

BTW smoking weed is not WORSE than tobacco contrary to the propaganda. But it's also not harmless as many people think. Cannabis, while less noxious than tobacco is in the same ballpark. If you must use it think about ingesting. Cook it up in your spaghetti sause or something. Lung cancer is a horrific but mostly preventable problem. :twocents:

I completely understand where you're coming from. I lost my Mom back in 1994 to lung cancer which later turned into lymphoma. Within 6 months of being diagnosed, her health deteriorated rapidly and with pain meds etc. the last 2 months of her life was just going through the motions.

Once it got into her lymph nodes, she was in so much pain that she had to be kept on pretty strong medication. That was the last time I got to talk to my Mom ... she was gone two months later. She passed away at 2am, with me holding her hand.

If you are a smoker, and you love your family - please quit. Get another habit. Chew gum, or whatever. Losing my Mom at such a young age is the hardest thing I've had to face. I don't wish it upon anyone.

Thanks everyone.

It’s pretty terrible. When a lot of the "older" people started to smoke it wasn’t as heavily campaigned against as it is today.

Now it’s all over the place but maybe even 15/20 years ago it was less of a concern.

The thing that gets me is most people that do it say if they could go back they wouldn’t and those that are starting can’t be doing it for taste... It tastes like crap in the beginning.

I have no idea why anyone would start now?

Anyway a lot of these people say "I am young" or "I don’t want to die old and in a wheelchair"

But they never stop to think that maybe someone else would appreciate having them around, would appreciate not seeing them very sick. 61 is a little young to be leaving this world in my opinion. We just buried his mother 2 years ago.

Yeah

She has never been a real heavy smoker. We are thinking strongly about having kids. So she was already pretty much done.. She threw out a whole pack after our first visit to see him.

Shes done.

Good intentions, but be careful about that statment....a lot of guys go straight to the dip can...10x the nicotine and the mouth rot to go with it

back in 99 my best friends mom got throat cancer from smoking. after the surgey and treatments she could barely talk but the cancer was gone. then she was in a really bad car accident. she was t-boned in the drivers door by a ford f250. anyhow, after awhile her right side was becoming more nd mor paralized. finally after seeing a number of doctors they finally did an mri and found the cause, she had a brain tumor. they say it wasnt conneted to the throat cancer in anyway, but the jolt from the wreck cause it to ruptur or whatever and spread. she actually had a 2inx2in section of her skull removed so they could remove 1 tumor, but more appeared and grew. the week prior to her death 1 doubled in size in 2 days. she was in lots of pain. she passed away right before thanksgiving last year. cancer really sucks and if you smoke its not an if your gonna get it, its a when. i know people that smoke and know its "hard to quit" but at least try, and i mean really try. im sorry to hear about your grandfather, i know how it feels. best of luck.
