Signal lights not blinking

Hey everyone,

The signal lights on my 82 l type Supra stopped blinking. When I flick them on they just stay on wothout blinking. Usually there is a "flasher Thingy" that you just replace but I don't know where it is. Anybody know off hand where it is? If not I'll have to go looking in the online TSRM.

Thanks.

Your lucky i just had this problem a couple days ago. take the lights out again and make sure its the right plug. If its the right plug then there is a bad connection between one of the wires. Look inside all the plugs to make sure you can see the metal clips that make the connection. Also make sure the wiring on the lights isnt taped with something IE electrical tape. One of my wires broke, I had to sauder it again, I tried it again and still nothing because the wires werent making contact inside the clip. Hope this helps! If not it could be the relay but i highly doubt that.

The flasher is mounted on the fuse panel which is in the left footwell inside the car, it's the silver round one. Also, if a bulb is burned out it will stop them from blinking to let you know.

Interesting, this must be a unique 82 only thing.

On my 85, when one of the turn signal bulbs is burned out, that particular side will blink really fast. Never did see what happens if I turn on the hazard lights.

Have not had the opportunity to try this on the 81 yet.

It depends on the flasher actually, Chris. I've had both the slow flash when a bulb is out (this was on my old '78 Ford LTD) and the super fast flash on my truck! I've also had the lamp just stay on without any flash. It depends on how the flasher is made, they have either load-type flashers, and one other type that I'm not real familiar with. If it's the load type, the current load (in amperage) determines the rate of the flasher. When a bulb burns out, the load is lesser, creating either not enough current to actuate the relay and giving you no flash, or just barely enough to get it to trigger a flash once a second or two.

Blah blah blah, I'm sure you all wanted a lesson on how a flasher works. Sorry folks! I'll go to sleep now!!!

Where else can you ask a simple question and get a complete lesson on how the flasher system works. I love that kind of stuff ... I'll look for the unit tonight 'cause I had to work late last night.

Thanks all.

Well, I got realy busy at work and didn't have time to change out the flasher untill now. For future referance the flasher is not silver and is not in the fuse box. It is a green box mounted directly above the steering column almost directialy behind the dash cluster. Impossible to see, impossible to reach, and the only way I found it was by following the colour of wires for the 82 wiring diagrams that are now hosted here. (many thanks for that too.) Oh yeah, the wires are covered with a black sheath as well so you have to unwrap stuff to find them. The same is true for 84's 'cause thats where i got my new flasher from.

Anyhoo, just for your information...

lol thanks for the location info! My signals and hazards aren't working and haven't been working since I got this car running again. Today I was rummaging through some stuff that I had to throw away or put away and found a flasher relay. Then I remember that while my blue car was sitting over the winter the flashers in my red car quit so i stole the relay from the blue car! Now I need a relay for my blue car again and then put it in but I couldn't remember where it went! Thanks!

It's lots of fun to change! I had to take out the heaater duct to the drivers side to find it in the first place but on my parts car I was just able to reach it after taking the bottom dash out. The relay is on a metal tab and to remove it you push it toward the front of the car. Good Hunting!

After searching for threads about hazzard lights, this is the only one I found that's close to what I'm looking for. My hazzard lights haven't worked for years, but my turn signals do. I think I once robbed the hazzard light flasher from my 84 Supra to fix my dad's truck, and have forgotten where the hazzard flasher (blinker) is located. I've been trying to fix it for a couple of years now, and i'd really appreciate it if someone could just tell me where the hazzard flasher is located? I found the turn signal/hazzard relay on top of the steering column, and it's working fine. I must need to just plug in a hazzard flasher somewhere, but where?

Thank you in advance! :)

There's only one flasher for both the turn signals and the hazard lights since the hazard lights are just simply all four turn signal lights lit up at the same time, but here's the catch; power for the turn signal switch is supplied by the TURN fuse, while power for the hazard switch is supplied by the HAZ-HORN fuse. Perhaps your HAZ-HORN fuse is blown? Does your horn work?

#14 ·
Yup, my horn has always worked. Is there a separate relay for just the hazard lights? I think it was a relay that I robbed to fix my dad's horn on his 92 Toyota truck. I have a feeling it was somewhere in the drivers kick panel area. I'll have to look down there again as time and weather permits. Thank you for the help so far! :)

I'm having issues here myself with an 85 P type. The hazards will not work but if U put the hazard switch in the "on" position then the turn signals won't work. I could have sworn it wasn't the case B4 (since all had to be working when the car was 'safetied" a year ago) but the horn is also not working now. All fuses are good.

Any ideas on trouble shooting this as I do want the hazards working??

You did check the HAZ/HORN fuse already, haven't you? That controls both of the things not working for you.

BTW, I still don't have working hazard lights yet. :faint: I hope it's just a dirty switch on top of the steering column. Been too cold to fix, or other family priorities get in the way.

BTW swapped the (green) relay with both an exact replacement and a black Toyota one that physicall fits. Same deal...turn signals work but no hazards/4 way flashers. Even tho' the other two relays were "used"...what are the odds of 3 relays doing the exact same thing?? Because of this I doubt it's a relay issue...which is why I'm asking for help.

Why don't you try asking someone in a Toyota dealer (parts department) which part or fuse is responsible for working the turn signals, blinker? They've helped me in the past whith technical questions like that. Does'nt sound like something to hard to figure out, sounds like a fusible problem. Good luck!

Hello, I would like to tell you guys how I just managed to fix my signals, they worked fine and i realized they stopped working, turn signals worked fine, of course, so I checked fuse, it was good, i figured that was the symptom, but no.

It's as simple as jiggling the button, I pressed down on it when the hazards were engaged(To try to push it slightly further downwards to engage), not only that I slid it slightly forwards and backwards to free off the corrosion while pressing down on it, I know it sounds silly but it worked for me, good luck.

Sorry for bumping, I figured i would share my knowledge anywhere i could so others could profit.

Whoops, thought I updated this one. I did get my hazards working again, and it WAS a dirty switch. I had to disassemble part of it to get to the contacts, and then rubbed the dirty, gunky grease off and smeared a little fresh grease on. Reassembled, and work perfectly again! I've also had to do this same procedure for the windshield wiper stalk switch on the 86 two tone. The steering column switches get really dusty over time, and combined with the switch grease Toyota used, the switches need to be cleaned. It's just the way it is with these old cars. :)
