Try Crutchfield...

Try looking at the www Crutchfield dot come site. They let you do comparisons between different systems. It's pretty easy to find what you want there. Careful with the video screens and 1st, 3rd and 5th gears...

Kory -

You know that they're illegal in CA, so if you get pulled over, they'll write you another ticket for one. FYI.

Actually they are illegal in most States!!! Only thing that is legal in the front/dash, I believe are those GPS/Navigational screens. Other screens that allow you to play videos/DVD's/Playstation/whatever, they are "legal" but they are only supposed to be operational when the car is stationary/not in gear, or if they are in the backseat (behind the driver). So yes, depending on how it's set up, if you are caught, you can be cited for it.

I agree with his knowledge.... i never planned on using it in motion... just want to be able to play my rather large collection of music videos while im cleaning my car or at a show'n'shine meet....

Same way a lot of us install "illegal" parts under the hood (not me of course :) ). Remember it only illegal if you get caught. I think its just illegal to have a non nav video screen that works when the car is in motion. You can watch it all you want when you are parked (assuming you aren't watching porn or something where any Joe can see it)

most of the major brands have one... i think most of them are capable of viewing any dvd disc that is autoplay enabled, but i am not sure about a menu based system with .mpgs.

might want to check out clarion, alpine and maybe kenwood, they are usually at the forefront of the technology race.
just start checking specs on their sites, or email the support/service departments, thats what they pay those gals and guys for. :)

as far as them being illegal.... in pennsylvania they are illegal "if" you don't hook a switch up to the ebrake.... that way you can only watch it with the ebrake on.

try www.etronics.com for generic ones for a good price.

*btw... my headunit plays mpegs as music.... no video because no display though :)*

headunit that plays .mpg's are around...they are double din i believe (at least the ones ive seen) anyways. the headunit has to be an mp4 player (not a typeo, i said .mp4) mp4 is an even more compressed version of mp3 and the mp4 player headunits can also read mpgs i.e. music videos...pretty awesome stuff...hth

my mark3 buddy had an old compaq desktop he was gonna try to make one out of with freebsd and a 2 line led display.

but i think a laptop is the way to go. for maximum pimp value get a wireless keyboard/mouse, lcd screen in the dash(or flipdown) and run it off the s-video. dont forget the wireless nic to keep your music up to date with ur home pc's.

just get a touch screen instead of the mouse.... they have programs that you can run for cars to access files like musuc and such with a touch screen

WMA isnt a bad codec but not all players will play the files. And Micro$oft is the RIAA's bitch and will do anything they say. Did you know that Windows media player 9 and above reports back all the files you play with it unless you tell it not to. In my opinion thats some backhanded sneaky shit.

MP3 is a Video codec, they are only using the the audio layer of the MPEG codec to compress music.

Apples's AAC audio format is very similar to the MP4 codec, it is also NOT a lossless format, incidentally WMA is also similar to the MP4 codec, which was developed by the fraunhoffer institute the same people that developed the mp3. This was way back in 1987 and they used Toms Diner as the song to tweak the codec.

Monkeys audio is a good losless format but you wil only get about 1/2 compression at the most with a lossless compression.

MAn., if your stero is worth half a rabbid's shit, you can definately tell the diffference between loslesss and anything else. if you are whinging about space... man.... hdd's are cheap. for what you pay for a good hooker, you can nab a few hundred gig's easy.

---fucak lossy compression.

I'm running a very stripped down version of XP Pro similar to Bart's PE (a copy of WinPE). XP doesn't seem to mind the occasional (and usually all too often) hard shut-down. I was getting too many errors when I tried win98 and win2k. But the problems with low voltage inverter power loss situations has been fixed since I added the alternator & battery.

I'm looking into running linux that boots off the CD, but that would mean longer boot times that running off the HDD. I know they have some pretty slim linux installs that can be made to boot straight from as small as a 128MB USB Flash Drive.
