spring compressors?

I've got a couple of different coil spring compressors like this one, and this one. I had one for decades and another I got at an estate sale down the street. I hate them. They flex and bind and then tend to gall the threads. I was thinking about buying something more robust, but I have no direct experience with other types. If any of y'all have used something else you like that's not like thousands of dollars, I'd appreciate input. I was looking at things like this hydraulic one or maybe this hand crank one. But then again those take up a lot of space and could never be used for some "on-car" applications so I was wondering if one like this one or perhaps the clam shell type would work better than the ones I got and be useful over a wide range of potential applications?

Oh thats kinda cool.

Phil the ones I have are just like the 2nd set you linked, KD brand though I belive. I've never had too much of a problem with them, if you only take each side down a little bit at a time and be careful. They can be really dangerous if you don't mount them right, thats for sure.

Agree with Fiend. I bought mine at O'Reilly, and I think it's a KD. Big threaded shaft with clamp fingers to grab the spring.

I only use them when I have the strut off the car, and as Fiend says, run them down a bit at a time and keep them even, and they grip the spring fine.

I also have one of the clam shell types I bought at Harbor Freight. It's built pretty stout and looks like it would work fine (I've never used it), but GAWD.....it weighs a ton!

When I rented the ones from the parts store they are built like the HG ones (they resembled the second link you posted). It was my first time changing struts and springs so I was kind of nervous after watching YouTube videos lol... but they worked fine.
