On hiway Check engine light starts to come on and off after 5 seconds as is normal for a fault when I give it a little gas to go from say 65 to 70mph. It happens a mile later and then more often and 10 miles later the engine's struggling with no power and finally slows down and stalls with a rough loping idle to follow.
The Fuel filter's clogged and fuel pump gurgles but only puts out 10psi. 245Kmi on car, so presumably on pump too (I am 3rd owner). I put over 115Kmi on car and filter was probably replaced when 6mge went in 80+Kmi ago. It's an 84 with an in tank pump which I ordered last night from Jeff Watson at Jay Marks Toy for $245
vs $395 from local dealer. Delivery in 2 days from Texas to NJ. I only use Shell, BP (formerly Amoco), or Mobil gasolene.
Do they have to drop the tank to replace the pump? Should I have the tank dropped and cleaned out anyway?
